Whether it's from friends who are asking for freebies (advice or product) or overzealous clients, we're sharing our tips for setting boundaries, covering your ass and how to protect yourself moving forward. You've spent a lot of time and resources growing that beautiful talent of yours, don't give it away for free!
People who are not paying clients who are asking for too much
"Pick your brain" conversations or "my budget is tight" leads in an email is a red flag
If someone reaches out via DM, emails, etc, redirect them to resources rather than directly answer questions.
The importance of boundaries and how to communicate them (sometimes you have to just say NO)
What resources can you point them to that doesn't require much of your time? (If you get asked the same things over and over, think about writing a blog post, email template, record a podcast, convert it into a lead magnet!)
People who are paying clients who are asking for too much
Lookout for scope creep! Scope creep is continuous or uncontrolled growth in a project’s scope, at any point after the project begins. This can occur when the scope of a project is not properly defined, documented, or controlled.
This is where your contract is your BFF. Have your revisions/payment policy clearly outlined in your contract and don’t be afraid to repeat it to your client throughout the entire process.
It’s really hard to set retroactive boundaries with clients. Setting them upfront helps avoid an uncomfortable situation later on.
Are you guilty of asking for handouts?
Just stop! Unless you might actually hire this person just don't put them in an uncomfortable situation
