Giving Constructive Criticism Without Sounding Like An A$$hole

As business owners, collaborators and creatives, you will have to give constructive criticism to people you’re working with. And the way you handle giving criticism and feedback can make or break a project. In today’s episode, we’re breaking down how you can effectively dish out constructive criticism to get the results you want, as well as tips for accepting it when it comes your way.

When should you give constructive criticism?

  • Always, sometimes, never?

  • Does the person need to ask for it?

    • When someone asks for it, give it to them! Don’t tell them everything is rosy and perfect. They’re asking for ways to improve, so make the effort to provide something to help them grow.

The importance of how you deliver it

  • Don't go in for the kill.

  • Tayler's "soft kid gloves"

  • Receiving criticism is hard because people often take it as a personal referendum...use words that focus on the project as opposed to the person who did the work

  • Be specific and make sure that it's actionable

  • Compliment sandwiches

What you do after matters a lot too

  • This is part of what separates good managers from bad ones

  • Support the person with resources to improve

  • Check-in and follow up
