Trust Me, I'm an Influencer
Can we all just admit that the "influencer" world is a mess? And yet, they are somehow still a necessary tool for your marketing strategy. In today's episode, we talk about the good, the bad and the ugly of working with influencers, how to find one that aligns with your brand, and how to create a fruitful relationship.
How to reply to one when they ask for free shit
Be skeptical of giving things away in exchange for exposure
Is this person or company's audience actually your audience?
Ask for demographic insights and engagement numbers on other posts they have done in exchange for free product
Ask for samples so you can visit the post and look at the comments (are the comments made by real people?)
Gifting product is a marketing expense; do you have the budget for it?
Contracts!!! If the person isn't willing to send you a contract that outlines what you are giving them, when they are expected to do in return and when you need to run for the hills.
How to approach one
Be intentional and do your research
Don't send a generic "Hey friend," email; you should be sending something that makes it clear you've done your due diligence and really are interested in working with them
Make sure your pitch includes what's in it for them
Cut to the chase; this isn't a big 'ol business deal that should take multiple phone calls.
